The Burj Al Arab’s history dates back to the 1990s, during a period when Dubai was rapidly transforming into a global hub for tourism, business, and luxury. The visionary behind the project was Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, who wanted to create an architectural icon that would symbolize Dubai’s ambition and modernity.
The hotel was designed by British architect Tom Wright of Atkins and construction began in 1994. The design, inspired by the sail of a traditional Arabian dhow, aimed to reflect both Dubai’s maritime heritage and its forward-looking aspirations. The structure was built on a man-made island, 280 meters off the coast of Jumeirah Beach, and was connected to the mainland by a private bridge.
One of the most challenging aspects of the construction was stabilizing the island foundation. Engineers drove 230 concrete piles into the sand, each 40 meters long, and created a ground layer of large rocks to protect the island from the harsh marine environment. The structure itself is made of steel and concrete, with the iconic sail-shaped exterior being a white Teflon-coated fiberglass material.
After five years of construction, the Burj Al Arab was completed in 1999, officially opening in December of that year. The hotel’s interior was designed by Khuan Chew, whose luxurious design features extensive use of 24-carat gold leaf, vibrant colors, and opulent materials like marble and crystal.
Upon its opening, the Burj Al Arab immediately gained international attention for its extravagant design and the unprecedented level of luxury it offered. Though it is often unofficially referred to as a “seven-star hotel” due to its opulence, the hotel officially holds a five-star deluxe rating, the highest category recognized internationally.
